DIRECTOR'S INTRODUCTION
For the last fourteen years, The Oxford Advanced Studies Program has offered hundreds of enthusiastic young people, from the USA and elsewhere, the opportunity to study and live in the historic and vibrant student city of Oxford, home to one of the world's oldest and most celebrated universities. Participants include those looking for final credits to complete High School, ‘Interim Year' students, who have deferred college entry by a semester or year, or college students taking a term or semester in Oxford. All are looking for a study abroad experience that will expand their intellectual and cultural horizons as well as being relevant to the academic work they will do when they return home. OASP offers just such an experience, combining stimulating academic courses in a wide range of subjects with a full social, sporting and cultural program.
One of the most satisfying aspects of the semester courses is the way in which students develop and mature during their time in Oxford. When they leave, our students are much better equipped, both intellectually and personally, to cope with the challenges of college and adult life. The tutorial mode of teaching - modelled on the system still favoured by Oxford and Cambridge Universities - encourages students to think for themselves, to explore ideas freely and analytically, under close scrutiny. On a social level, students learn to mix with others from different backgrounds and cultures, which helps them develop tolerance and a broader perspective. Any appraisal of the OASP program cannot afford to overlook the beauty of the setting. The city of Oxford, with its architectural splendour, peaceful parks and meadows and lively student culture, provides an incomparable backdrop. There is much to be learned beyond the classroom, as well as in it, and we ensure our students give themselves more than a taste of England's rich heritage, organising regular visits to places of historical and cultural interest, such as London, Blenheim Palace and Stratford upon Avon. For those who are intellectually curious, have a sense of adventure and self-reliance, and enjoy the stimulus of others' thinking, this is a marvellous experience. Time and again, students, parents and counselors have praised the positive benefits of being part of the Oxford Advanced Studies Program. The testimonials, as you will see, speak for themselves!
