ART & ARCHITECTURE

Around OxfordThis course traces the development of the visual arts from the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, to modern times. Western European art has always been restless, changing style to satisfy the demands of its patrons, and the work of artists such as Michaelangelo and Leonardo is given prominence. Architects have always had to reconcile the aesthetic with function, and contrasting styles of Gothic and Renaissance architecture are examined. The artistic and architectural heritage of Oxford is not neglected; visits take place to Oxford museums and students are encouraged to look at and observe the architectural style of the many beautiful Oxford colleges.
