MEDICAL BIOLOGY
The study of Medical Biology can be said to have originated in our earliest struggles with survival. We owe much to early herbalists who did what they could to relieve pain or fever - still the fundamental aim of medical scientists today. This course teaches a foundation of biological topics sufficient to appreciate the functioning of the nervous and the immune systems, which have profound implications for human health. It also examines the nature versus nurture arguments for the causes of disease, with particular reference to heart disease and diabetes, diseases that might be regarded as consequences of recent improvements in the fortunes of the human race. The course is ideal for students wishing to study medicine, although this is not a pre-requisite.
